Interrupted handovers

What if another driver takes the DropIn parking space?

Learn what the giver and finder should do when a public parking space is taken or blocked during an accepted DropIn handover.

Why this can happen

An accepted DropIn is an agreement between two members, but it does not change the legal status of a public parking space. A third driver may not know about the handover, may be following a visible queue or may simply move into the space first.

Technology can reduce uncertainty between the matched members, but it cannot physically reserve the bay.

What the finder should do

Use the safe interruption controls as soon as it is clear the accepted handover cannot continue.

  1. Stay in the normal traffic flow and do not stop beside the bay to argue.
  2. Use Another vehicle is blocking the handover or Spot taken — find me another.
  3. Follow the app back to searching if you still need a park.
  4. Leave the area if traffic or behaviour makes the situation unsafe.

What the giver should do

Do not use your car to block the third vehicle, and do not ask the matched finder to confront anyone. Leave normally when it is safe and confirm the interrupted outcome in DropIn.

The app closes private GPS, plate and call access after the handover ends.

How DropIn records it

A space taken by another vehicle is different from one member abandoning the other. DropIn records it as an interrupted handover so the finder can search again and neither member is unfairly blamed for a public-space conflict.

The safest outcome is more important than completing the handover.

Questions about this guide

Does the matched finder have a legal right to the space?

No. DropIn does not create ownership or a legal reservation over a public parking space.

Will I lose my rating if another driver takes it?

The safe-interruption flow is designed to record this separately from an ordinary cancellation.

Will DropIn find another space?

The finder can be returned to searching, but another nearby giver may not be available immediately.
