Who can use DropIn? Surfers, locals and nearby communities

DropIn began with surfers but supports nearby community members who want to give or find a free, voluntary parking handover.

Why surfers came first

Surf sessions have a natural turnover: one person finishes while another is arriving. At popular beaches, local surfers already coordinate informally through conversation or private groups.

DropIn turns that behaviour into a one-to-one GPS handover that can be understood by both people without publishing the bay to everyone.

Open to more than surfers

Runners, swimmers, workers, visitors and other community members can face the same parking uncertainty. Keeping DropIn free and broadly useful can create more givers and finders at the times each area needs them.

Community interests are context, not proof of entitlement to a public parking space.

What a giver can decide

The giver sees the proposed member and chooses Accept or Pass. They may prefer someone whose community context they recognise, but the handover must remain respectful and consistent with the service’s rules.

A pass occurs before private details are exchanged and does not create a public judgment about the finder.

The standard for every member

The strongest local community is created by reliable behaviour, not by excluding everyone unfamiliar.

  • Use accurate profile and vehicle information.
  • Respect visible queues and prior face-to-face arrangements.
  • Keep traffic moving and follow signs.
  • Never confront another driver over a space.
  • Contribute by giving a park when you can.

Questions about this guide

Do I have to be a surfer?

No. DropIn began with surfers but the app is open to nearby community members.

Why does the profile ask about interests?

Interests help members recognise community context and help DropIn understand who it serves without requiring a street address.

Can a surfer-only public parking space be created?

DropIn does not change the lawful access rules of a public car park. Any official restriction comes from the authority responsible for the space.
