Why DropIn is free and has no parking bids
Learn why DropIn avoids member fees and bidding for public spaces, and how local business support could keep the service free.
No payment for the space
The giver does not own the public bay and should not sell access to it. DropIn therefore has no feature for bidding, tipping or transferring money between the matched members.
The value is coordination: knowing that a real person nearby is leaving and being able to recognise each other safely.
Why free access helps the network
A handover network needs both people who offer and people who search. A membership paywall could reduce participation at exactly the moment local availability matters.
Free access also makes it easier for a member to invite a surf mate, family member or another local contributor.
A possible sustainable model
Local businesses may eventually sponsor a community or appear in clearly labelled placements. That support should not change who receives a parking proposal, reveal private location history or allow a business to buy priority for a member.
Any commercial model should be transparent and measured against the promise that members do not pay to give or receive a handover.
What DropIn can measure responsibly
Sponsors do not need a person’s plate, phone number or exact live location to understand whether the community is active.
- Aggregate visits and access requests.
- Offers, searches and completed handovers by broad area and time.
- Time to match and searches with no available giver.
- Interrupted handovers and return participation.
- Navigation provider choices in aggregate.
Questions about this guide

Can a giver ask for money?
No payment or bidding is supported. DropIn is designed for voluntary community handovers.
